for Mathematics Education
The
students of Mathematics Education 2013 at Yogyakarta State University have
English lesson in the second semester. The lecturer of this English lesson is
Prof. Dr. Marsigit, M.A.
The firs meeting of English class
took place on Tuesday, February 11th, 2014. Mr. Marsigit was
substituted by Mr. Ilham. He introduced about English lesson and explained about
the highlight in following English lesson in the second semester. The first
meeting with Mr. Marsigit took place on Tuesday, February 18th, 2014.
The activities on that day were introduction of each other and about the
English lesson.
There are an strategy on how to be
able or to learn English, especially English for mathematics education. Before
the strategy, there is an approach. Before the approach, there is a belief. But
the belief will related with an understanding or an information. Information from
the lecturer’s experience is important, include the educational background.Mr.
Marsigit’s educational background is mathematics education and phylosophy. He
got the title of Master of Art as philosophy, but concentrate on philosophy of
mathematics. Mr. Ilham got the title of Master of Science in concentrated on
mathematics education.

In following English lesson in this semester, we have some
assumptions. The first assumption is "I believe that you are
also have your experience in daily language".
In formal experience, the students had got English lesson in the Junior High School and Senior High School. The second assumption is "You are an adult". It means that the students able to take responsibilities to their life and activities. And then "We have similar chance to learn English". It means that everybody able to learn English. And then "You have your responsibilities in the learning". It means that the students are adult enough to take their own responsibilities. Beside that, there is also "You should be an active learner". And the last assumption is "Language is life". To learn something life, we need life approach. Process and activity are very important to show that you are life.

Beside the assumptions above, there
are two specific assumptions. The first specific assumption is “mathematics is
language and language is communication”. Communication activity consist of
talking, speaking, listening, hearing, writing, understanding, translating, elaborating,
explanation, informing, answering, questioning, selecting, etc. The second
specific assumption is about mathematics. All mathematics we are learning in
this semester is mathematics for university. As the candidate of mathematics
teacher, we should learn about school mathematics.
The next important thing in English
lesson is the method. The facilities are also provided by the lecturer to
support the method. The methods are reflecting the lecture, comment in his
blog, weekly test, and learning book of mathematics bilingual for Junior High
school. Mr. Marsigit suggested us to follow his blog, choose an appropriate
posting, read the posting and its dialogue, and then lay some comments. We can
